Welcome Fans

Here are some hot links about the University of Tennessee - " Home of The Vols ". The legendary ABC announcer Keith Jackson noted in his opening monologue prior to the Fiesta Bowl that no school in the country can match Tennessee with football tradition. The pageantry of a cool, crisp Saturday afternoon in Knoxville is truly second to none.

They are the "1998 National Champions", who went undefeated (13-0) for the season. The '98 team was the only team to go 13-0 in school history and is considered the best overall team since 1938. Tee Martin led the Vols to their second consecutive SEC title that year. In 1997, Peyton Manning had helped lead the Vols to their first SEC title since 1990. During the four years (1994-1997) that Peyton Manning played at Tennessee, he broke 42 records - 2 NCAA, 7 SEC and 33 at Tennessee. Through nine seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, he hasn't missed a game, has won two NFL MVP awards, has carved a still-expanding niche in the NFL record book and earned a long-sought Super Bowl championship. Here's a great site on Peyton Manning: Peyton-Manning.net

Kiffin opens up about departure
  -- (Feb. 24, 2010) --
He passed on another opportunity Tuesday during an interview with the News Sentinel. Yet Kiffin seemed confused - and perhaps a bit dismayed - by UT athletic director Mike Hamilton's public claim last month that Kiffin wasn't a "good cultural fit" at UT. "Amen"
Dollars and sense drive UT salaries
  -- (Feb. 24, 2010) --
So I doubt Tennessee football fans will schedule a parade or set an old sofa on fire to celebrate the announced salaries of their new coaching staff. "Vols save money" just doesn't have the same ring as "Vols beat Florida."
Rules committee tackles taunting, concussions
  -- (Feb. 14, 2010) --
INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA wants to get tough on taunting and make it more difficult for football players with concussions to try to tough it out. Both proposals were announced Thursday by the Football Rules Committee and must now be approved by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel.
NCAA moves to toughen already controversial excessive-celebration penalty
  -- (Feb. 13, 2010) --
The penalty, which stirred much controversy hereabouts when it was incorrectly called on Georgia’s A.J. Green against LSU last season, will get tougher in the 2011 season if approved by one more NCAA committee.
Florida St. vacates 12 football wins for cheating
  -- (Feb. 7, 2010) --
Florida State will vacate athletic victories from 2006 and 2007, including 12 credited to former football coach Bobby Bowden, as part of its penalty for an academic fraud scandal in 2006-07 involving 61 student-athletes, the school announced.
UT's future is bright, but past is present
  -- (Feb. 6, 2010) --
Tennessee's 2010 football recruiting class has center stage for now. But after being analyzed and celebrated the last few days, it will be mostly forgotten over the course of the next season.
Chuck Smith comes home
  -- (Feb. 6, 2010) --
Tennessee's Derek Dooley completed his staff Friday with a familiar face, naming Chuck Smith to the ninth and final assistant coach's position. Smith is a former UT and pro football defensive star originally from Athens, Ga., where he was a teammate of Dooley's at Clarke Central High School in the 1980s.
Dooley: 'My goal today is not to make any national headlines'
  -- (Feb. 4, 2010) --
No trash-talk. No mention of rivals or opposing coaches. New Tennessee coach Derek Dooley wouldn't even break down his freshly signed recruiting class at his breakfast celebration Thursday morning at the Knoxville Convention Center.
"AN AMAZING PERFORMANCE"
  -- (Feb. 4, 2010) --
After the events of Jan. 12 and the early days thereafter, there had been thoughts among the Vol faithful that things might go belly-up, recruiting wise. Not enough time to salvage the class, worried fans thought.
Kiffin closes on two top classes before can of worms opens
  -- (Feb. 3, 2010) --
Lane Kiffin is the coach who keeps on giving ...... crap to Urban Meyer.... headaches to the NCAA.... sweet promises to recruits. Yeah, all those things. Still. Change of venue hasn't seemed to matter. Now hold on to your commitment list, recruitniks.
Tennessee's Dooley hangs on to top class
  -- (Feb. 3, 2010) --
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Derek Dooley only had two weeks to salvage the top ten recruiting class left by predecessor Lane Kiffin when he bolted for Southern California. His class may look a bit different, but it's still one of the best in the nation.
Top Uncommitted Players
  -- (Feb. 1, 2010) --
National signing day is less than one week away and while the majority of the nation's top uncommitted players have declared their college destinations, there are many who have yet to announce. Here's a breakdown of the uncommitted and where things stand heading into crunch time.
Ambles finally finds way to UT, 'ridin up to k-town'
  -- (Jan. 31, 2010) --
Markeith Ambles finally made it to Tennessee on Saturday for his official visit. It wasn’t easy. The highly rated receiver and former UT commitment from Henry County High School in McDonough, Ga., made it to Knoxville after spending the night in Charlotte, N.C., on Friday.
A look at UT's commitments before and after Dooley
  -- (Jan. 31, 2010) --
First a coaching change, then snow; what's next? Locusts in Knoxville? Despite the challenges, Tennessee coach Derek Dooley has certainly had an impact on UT's 2010 signing class since being hired on Jan. 16.
Vols, Lady Vols Combine for 37 on SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll
  -- (Jan. 29, 2010) --
The Tennessee football team landed 20 student-athletes among 37 UT recipients on the 2009 Southeastern Conference Fall Academic Honor Roll, as released Friday by SEC Commissioner Mike Slive.
Williams impressive so far at Senior Bowl
  -- (Jan. 28, 2010) --
In case you haven't been following a lot of news out of the Senior Bowl this week in Mobile, Ala., defensive tackle Dan Williams continues to improve his draft stock. Not that it should be a major surprise.
Class of 2010 Team Football Recruiting Rankings
  -- (Jan. 27, 2010) --
When Lane Kiffin left the Vols to coach the Trojans, it sent a Tennessee class that was poised to jump into the top five reeling. New Vols coach Derek Dooley has said and done all the right things so far.
Under new management
  -- (Jan. 27, 2010) --
It was a wild offseason with many of the nation's top programs making coaching changes. With one week until national signing day, here's how some of these programs are faring under new leadership:
All-SEC recruiting rankings (defense)
  -- (Jan. 27, 2010) --
Now we’ll take a look at this season’s All-SEC defensive players and where they were ranked coming into the league. South Carolina’s Eric Norwood, a three-time All-SEC selection, had 78 players ranked ahead of him in the state of Georgia alone in 2006.
Volquest.com reports Kiffin picked up recruit in limo
  -- (Jan. 22, 2010) --
Lane Kiffin has only been the USC head football coach for 10 days and has already committed his first secondary violation. WOW, what a bozo...
Tennessee coach Derek Dooley playing catch-up
CommercialAppeal.com -- (Jan. 22, 2010) --
When new University of Tennessee football assistant Terry Joseph showed up just across the Mississippi border this week to visit highly touted Olive Branch High offensive linemen Shon Coleman and Damien Robinson, he had to take a deep breath.
Wilson not surprised by Lane Kiffin's exit
JacksonSun.com -- (Jan. 22, 2010) --
Wilson, who was a Vols team captain in 1998 when they won the national championship, said he was not surprised when Lane Kiffin announced he was leaving to take the head coaching job at Southern California, but he was surprised that his stay in Knoxville was as brief as it was.
Hialeah coach impressed with Dooley
  -- (Jan. 21, 2010) --
Berman said he was particularly impressed with Dooley’s plan to rebuild UT’s football program. That plan involves recruiting two Hialeah prospects who Dooley met: defensive linemen Corey Lemonier and Calvin Smith.
Coach Derek Dooley recruiting in Florida today
  -- (Jan. 21, 2010) --
Tennessee isn't letting a talented pair of defensive linemen go elsewhere without a fight. UT head coach Derek Dooley is scheduled to be at Hialeah (Fla.) High School to visit with Calvin Smith and Corey Lemonier.
Kiffin never had Tennessee driver's license
  -- (Jan. 21, 2010) --
Former football coach Lane Kiffin drove back and forth daily between the University of Tennessee and a $2.6 million house in West Knox County for more than a year without a Tennessee driver's license.
Vols continue search for new coaches
-- (Jan. 21, 2010) --
KNOXVILLE -- A whirlwind week of University of Tennessee football coaching news temporarily halted Wednesday, as first-year head coach Derek Dooley continued his pursuit of a defensive coordinator.
Vols pick up late commitment from 4 star WR
  -- (Jan. 20, 2010) --
Late Breaking News:InsideTennessee.com has confirmed that four-star wideout Justin Hunter committed to Tennessee late Tuesday night. It appears that a home visit from UT coaches is all it took. New Head Coach Derek Dooley proves he can close the deal, by reeling in one of the top wideouts in the country.
Jets' Ellis expected to play despite broken hand
  -- (Jan. 19, 2010) --
The former Tennessee Vols star left the game in the first quarter, but returned with the hand wrapped in a cast. Jets head coach Rex Ryan said Monday that it's broken, "but we're going to let him think it's no big deal."
Senior Bowl to include 25 from the SEC
  -- (Jan. 19, 2010) --
The SEC will have 25 players on the South roster in the Under Armour Senior Bowl this year. That's more than any other conference in the country. Of the 25 SEC representatives in this year’s game, 10 landed on All-American lists this season and 21 were named to All-SEC squads.
Rams lose receivers coach Baggett to University of Tennessee
StLToday.com -- (Jan. 18, 2010) --
St. Louis Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo will have at least one new assistant coach on his 2010 staff. That’s because wide receivers coach Charlie Baggett has left the Rams. He’s heading to the University of Tennessee where he will be an assistant head coach.

Bobby Campbell

Roots Were Strong for UT's Campbell

By JOHN PAINTER - University of Tennessee
March 9, 2010

20-Year Tenure Benefited Both Athletics, Academics

Bobby Campbell never believed his grass was always greener on the other side of the field. For 20 years as UT's sports turf manager, Campbell has grown, watered, nurtured, clipped, edged, weeded and doctored every blade of that green grass on every living Big Orange playing and practice surface the Knoxville campus had to offer. But Campbell is calling it a career. The 64-year-old Director of Sports Surface Management says it's time to step aside. "It's time to go do something else," Campbell says. "It's time to be a granddad for awhile because you don't get many mulligans in life." Campbell long has been aware of the need for perfection on its first try.

Take Neyland Stadium, for example. Tennessee's pride-and-joy facility shines center stage during autumn Saturdays, and that's especially true of the green patch of earth measuring 120 yards long by 53 and 1-3 yards wide. Fans always notice the checkerboard end zones and bright Power T in the center, but they also appreciate a beautifully manicured field when they see it. And UT fans don't just value it, they demand it.

Former Vol Sanderson dies

By Steve Phillips
Mar. 5, 2010

Ken Sanderson, a three-year letterman in football under head coach Johnny Majors, died Tuesday in Knoxville. A graduate of the University of Tennessee, Sanderson was a wide receiver for the Vols from 1976-78, playing in 25 games. His career stats include 10 catches for 125 yards, an average of 12.5 per catch.

The Knoxville native attended Karns High School before joining the Vols in 1975. An all-star athlete in high school, Sanderson made All-KIL in both football and basketball. A prominent business owner and developer, Sanderson was a dedicated servant to God and a faithful member to The Gathering International, Partners in Christ, as well as First Baptist Church Concord. He had a passion and love for coaching young athletes, and guiding their walk with the Lord.

SEC mailbag: Is Tennessee program in better shape now?

By Chris Low
Mar. 3, 2010

Bryan in Nashville, Tenn., writes question: Lane Kiffin has said he left the Tennessee program in better shape than he found it. Do you agree? Chris Low answer: Not particularly, especially with his leaving the way he did during the middle of the recruiting period and then his recruiting coordinator trying to take Tennessee recruits with them to USC. In fairness, I thought Tennessee was a well-coached team last season in most areas between the white lines. But his organization and overall management of the program was lacking, and some of the things he did to supposedly bring attention to the program ended up bringing embarrassment instead.

He also inherited a lot more talent than he claimed he did. The Vols will have two players go in the first round of the NFL draft in April and may have as many as six drafted. We’ll also see how his only recruiting class at Tennessee pans out. Two players from that class (Nu’Keese Richardson and Mike Edwards) have already been sent packing because of off-the-field issues and another one (Janzen Jackson) was close.

MacLain describes Vols Jr Day as "Awesome"

By James Bryant
Mar. 1, 2010

For one unofficial visitor things were a little different than it was for most who attended the Tennessee Junior Day Saturday. Eric MacLain, a former two year commitment to the Vols had already been through a lot of the activities that most were going through Saturday. For MacLain, who had decommitted from Tennessee in the last ten days, it was a chance to get some questions answered and an opportunity to get to know his third coaching staff.

“It was awesome,” MacLain told InsideTennessee.com. “It was a great day. Coach Dooley actually reached out to me and we sat down and talked before Junior Day even started, that was nice.” MacLain committed to the Vols when Phillip Fulmer was the head coach, the former Knoxville area athlete wasn’t sure where he stood with the new coaching staff, causing a little discomfort for the long time pledge.

Vols’ Derek Dooley offers lineman Posey from his alma mater

By Chip Towers
Mar. 1, 2010

There’s a recruiting battle brewing for an offensive tackle who plays ball about a mile from UGA’s Vince Dooley Athletics Complex in Athens. But the Bulldogs aren’t involved in it. At least not so far. Alan Posey, a 6-foot-6, 310-pound junior at Clarke Central High School, received an official scholarship offer from Tennessee this past weekend after traveling to Knoxville for the Volunteers’ junior day. That was offer No. 6 for Posey, who also has been tendered invitations to play football at Georgia Tech, Clemson, South Carolina, Maryland, Illinois and Cincinnati.

Getting the offer from UT was particularly pleasing for Posey since the Vols’ head coach (Derek Dooley) and the assistant coach recruiting him (Chuck Smith) are both Clarke Central alums. “I had never met any of the coaches before, but I had read about those two,” Posey said Sunday. “Being from the same high school, I knew about Coach Smith and Coach Dooley. Their pictures are up on the wall and they’re like legends at Clarke Central. So I was pretty excited to meet them.”

Eric Berry believes he should be the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft.

Eric Berry says he will be top NFL draft pick

By Jim Wyatt
Mar. 1, 2010

INDIANAPOLIS — Eric Berry wasn't afraid of ladders or work, so his father hired him to paint houses. The youngster put in long summer days, the sun scorching his body. "He said I was cheap labor,'' Berry said with a smile at the NFL Combine on Sunday. "I think it was around $5.50 an hour. But I worked for that $5.50, man.''

Berry won't come cheap now. After painting a masterpiece at the University of Tennessee, the safety is one of the top prospects in this year's NFL Draft. Many analysts consider him a top-three pick. Berry considers himself worthy of No. 1. "I really just want to come here and leave no doubt,'' Berry said. "That is pretty much my whole goal, for anybody who has that little percentage in their mind that I am not good enough to be No. 1 or be up there with the other guys, I am trying to clear that up right now. … I feel like I am the best player in the draft.'' Berry has a great portfolio.

Nothing to hide for Dooley, including whereabouts

By Austin Ward
Feb. 24, 2010

Derek Dooley isn’t in hiding. The new Tennessee football coach also doesn’t want to be known as a recluse. Dooley just needs some time to get settled and accomplish a few things before he really starts talking. When he does appear in public though, like he did during a lengthy chat at Big Orange TipOff Club on Wednesday, it can be hard to slow him down.

“There’s this perception that I’m hunkered down avoiding the media,” said Dooley, who was hired Jan. 15 to replace Lane Kiffin. “I told (UT sports information officials Bud Ford and John Painter) that I hadn’t done anything. Nothing has happened. “I know everybody wants to know, ‘What are we doing over there?’ ” Dooley spent nearly 45 minutes trying to answer that question and many more from the audience during one of his few appearances since taking over the Vols last month.

UT football salaries announced

By UT reports
Feb. 24, 2010

The University of Tennessee Athletics Department announced coaching agreements for the new football staff on Tuesday. “In the few short weeks working with Coach Dooley, it is evident that he is going to do a tremendous job as coach at the University of Tennessee,” Director of Athletics Mike Hamilton said. “A great deal of that anticipated success is due to the first-class staff he has assembled to assist him. I look forward to watching them work in the months and years ahead."

Tennessee also announced the hiring of Bennie Wylie as head football strength coach under a two-year contract for $225,000 a year. All funding for the athletics department, including coaches’ salaries, is from monies generated by athletics’ resources and not from appropriated funding by the state of Tennessee or other university-related revenues.

Arkansas hopes quarterback Ryan Mallett will rise up.

New faces emerge as SEC eyes another crown

By Chris Low
Feb. 22, 2010

No matter how you slice it, some familiar faces in the SEC are gone. In fact, some might say the league has lost its star power, especially when you consider the likes of Tim Tebow, Rolando McClain, Eric Berry, Brandon Spikes, Joe Haden, Javier Arenas, Dexter McCluster, Anthony Dixon, Eric Norwood and Terrence Cody are all now embarking on their professional careers.

Can any league, even one that captured four straight BCS national championships, sustain such deep personnel losses and expect to stay atop the college football mountaintop? “I don’t think it will be any different,” said Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino, entering his third season in the SEC. “You’re going to see those other guys step up and be good players and be leaders. Hopefully, we have a few on our team.” No doubt, and a good place to start is a marquee quarterback. Arkansas has one of the best passers in the country in junior Ryan Mallett, who threw 30 touchdown passes a year ago and is the ideal building block.

Mike Wegzyn, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound strong arm quarterback.

Knoxville Catholic gets new quarterback

By James Bryant
Feb. 19, 2010

High school coaches always love for new families to move into their communities, especially if one of the members of the family is a talented quarterback. Mike Wegzyn’s father moved to Knoxville last fall for business purposes, it took the family a longer time to arrive in Knoxville from Michigan; apparently the time was well worth it. Wegzyn, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound strong arm quarterback, has enrolled at Knoxville Catholic High School and is expected to be the starter for the Fighting Irish in the fall. The talented signal caller is enjoying the move to the South so far.

“I like it a lot so far,” Wegzyn said Wednesday night after taking in a Tennessee Vol Basketball game. “Knoxville has been great. Dad got a great job down here last fall, we are happy we are all back together.” While Wegzyn has no official offers, he is hoping that college recruiters will get his new change of address. “A lot of schools are starting to show me a lot of attention,” Wegzyn told InsideTennessee.com.
